According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 14.8 km (5.7 mi). 13.9 km (5.4 mi) of it is land and 0.9 km (0.3 mi) of it (6.11%) is water.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 21,904 people, 10,428 households, and 6,298 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 1,572.0/km (4,070.1/mi). There were 12,788 housing units at an average density of 917.7/km (2,376.2/mi). The racial makeup of the CDP was 95.13% White, 1.41% African American, 0.27% Native American, 0.90% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.85% from other races, and 1.37% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.03% of the population.

There were 10,428 households out of which 19.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.0% were married couples living together, 9.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 39.6% were non-families. 32.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 20.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
